Classical Education

Philosophy of Education

Jackson Hole Classical Academy’s educational philosophy begins with Socrates’ assertion that “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

As a private school in the classical and Christian traditions, we believe that a Creator has ordered the world, and that a fulfilled human life examines this beautiful order. Through a good program of study, JHCA believes that a student can begin to grasp the underlying structure of reality in all its forms, whether mathematical, scientific, musical, or poetic. This program of study calls for a sense of wonder and the use of reason. It combines the heart and the head.

The created order of the world takes various forms in different disciplines. In science at JHCA, students discover the laws of nature and the universe. They do so, too, in a hands-on fashion. For instance, students explore the rich and diverse ecosystems of Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, and learn to perceive the world through both local and global lenses. In the humanities, students read and discuss the literary and philosophical classics that speak truths about the universal human condition. Teachers and students seek truth by disciplined study and good-willed conversation.

Since each child has been created with a soul and a will, JH Classical Academy treats each student as a full person. In every aspect of education, teachers seek to lead students towards a life of virtue. Thus, we work to equip students with the habits of attention, obedience, respect, and responsibility. These, to us, are the marks of a classical and Christian education.

Ultimately, through the pursuit of truth, we want students to love what is true, good, and beautiful. Our curriculum presents students with the best literature, music, drama, visual art, science and mathematics – the great works, in every discipline, that have shaped the course of human history. The study of these works helps to form students’ aesthetic and intellectual judgment. These works train both the heart and the mind.

A classical, Christian education consists of cognitive, emotional, and moral education—thinking deeply, loving noble things, and living well together. Every day, we work to cultivate students who flourish as individuals and contribute to their local, Jackson Hole communities and what’s more, to their national and global communities, as well.
