XDNU: Incorporating The Outdoors

From the doorsteps of our lower and upper school buildings, from the playground or from the exercise room in the field house – from all corners of our Jackson Hole campus – the idyllic mountain views of our valley tell us this: we live in a beautiful place.

At Jackson Hole Classical Academy, we embrace our unique and picturesque setting by incorporating it into our curriculum. With Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park to the north, JHCA students have unmatched access to some of the most ecologically diverse and geographically rich wilderness areas in the United States. From fall through summer, students explore their surroundings with faculty-led hikes, snowshoe outings, cross-country ski jaunts, and alpine ski trips at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

These outdoor excursions allow students to tangibly experience what they learn in the classroom. Students on a fall walk along Cache Creek trail might see a “yellow wood” like the one in Robert Frost's poem, The Road Less Traveled. When The Raptor Center brings owls and hawks for elementary students to see as a joint science and art class, they might also think of Tennyson's poem "The Eagle." When the 6th graders take a tour of the The Aerial Tram they see a real and striking example of applied mathematical and engineering concepts. Outdoor and off-campus experiences bring our students’ studies to life.

Charlotte Mason, whose educational principles have shaped our own, once said this:

“We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his own degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.”

We at the Academy couldn’t agree more!
