Head of School Update: Friday May 12, 2017

Dear JH Classical Families,

Our school is growing, but we still have room for new students in all but one grade. Your children are eager for more friends, especially in Grades 6-9.  If you have suggestions of families that want to know more about JHCA, please contact either Mrs. Landis or me. We are especially appreciative of the following parental recruiting and community building efforts:

 * Alyssa & Kevin Watkins are hosting an upper school event at Spotted Horse Ranch on Wednesday, May 17th @ 5:30 PM. They are eager to introduce more families to JHCA, and meet current families too, so please contact Alyssa with ideas: alyssa.watkins@gmail.com.

* Catherine & Tom Holland are hosting a 1st Grade BBQ at their home.
* Ben & Ashley Agee are hosting a Salon Dinner led by Dr. Kevin Roberts.
* Carrie Kirkpatrick & Courtney Marvin are hosting a mini-Salon Dinner.
* Jodi Emlyn & Becca Block are working on an incoming Kindergarten event.  * Mina & Jeff Neishabouri are hosting all the faculty at their home for a social event.

Feel free to organize social gatherings or let me know if you want support. We want to foster connections between current families, which often brings in new families, and we stand ready to assist you in this effort. I gave three tours this week and always enjoy exposing new families to our educational model.  Approximately 85% of the students that shadow end up joining, so shadowing is a powerful recruitment tool after coming on a tour.  As an update, 20 new students will join JHCA next year and several new applications are in process. I would like to add 30 new students this year, to bring our total to 100 students for the 2017-2018.

To assist in our recruitment efforts, we are offering two merit-based scholarships for incoming 9th Graders. These scholarships are open to current students and new students.  Please help us grow our 9th Grade by forwarding this scholarship opportunity!  Maggie Valiante (mwvaliante@gmail.com)our Board Chair is the contact person for the scholarships process. Applications are due on Friday, May 26thclick here.

Next fall’s inaugural 9th Grade class will study the traditional Liberal Arts courses of Geometry, Biology, Human Letters (Philosophy, History and Literature), Latin, Keyboard and Studio Art. However, they will also take a course in Practical Arts.  In designing the scope and sequence of this 90-minute course, we are including cooking, etiquette, dancing, self-defense, first aid, outdoor leadership, entrepreneurship, and similar practical life skills.  Our year will begin and end with a wilderness experience.  We are blessed with faculty that has a wide variety of expertise and other professionals in the community will facilitate this course.

Next week’s Evening of the Arts (Thursday, May 18, 6:30 p.m.) is a wonderful way to introduce families to JH Classical Academy.  Students are rehearsing songs, recitations, and producing amazing art pieces to share.  Please mark your calendar for this beautiful event, and invite a friend.

We are growing and planning for the future. Thank you for your partnership!
