Head of School Update: Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,

I hope your children, like mine, are having great summer experiences.  They still have over a month to enjoy the outdoors, read great books, and spend time with friends and family.  A tremendous year of learning and growing awaits them, beginning Tuesday, September 5th.

As of today, August 1st, our official preparations for the school year begin.  Four teachers just returned from a 3-week seminar at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture titled: Tragedy and Comedy: Literature as a Mode of Knowledge. Two teachers and our new Board Chair attended the Society for Classical Learning Conference, also in Dallas, titled: The Good Life.  Other faculty members are getting further training in their fields, some have summer jobs and most are visiting family.
As of tomorrow, all four new faculty members will have arrived in Jackson Hole.  They begin intensive curriculum training next week with a focus on what makes JH Classical Academy unique.  A total of 26 new students are joining our Academy and a few more enrollments are pending.  Please come to Back to School Night on Thursday, August 31 at 4:30 PM to meet our new teachers and welcome our new families.   Details on Back to School Night will follow later today.

Short videos that capture the joy of learning at JH Classical have long been needed on our website, and the first of six was completed yesterday. Please enjoy and share this short video, which features 'The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Other videos will be ready by Back to School night, so be sure to come to see the next in the series: Love of Learning, Beauty in the Arts, and The Classical Approach.

Here is the final version of our Academy's Annual Calendar for your planning, which can also be accessed on our resource page through your OwlNet Account.  A separate email will follow later this week on uniform guidelines and how to order uniforms through Lands End.

Our new campus plans are moving forward.  An official request for a pre-application meeting with the County Planners was filed in July.  By the end of the week you’ll see a new page on our site titled “Owl Happenings.” Regular updates on the project will be posted there.  Back to School Night will also be a chance to learn more about the exciting future plans for your school. If you have any specific questions please email: future@jhclassical.org.

I do hope you find time in the bustle of summer activities to find rest.  It’s not easy to do, but when we cultivate rest in our lives we experience such beautiful fruits. Intentionally setting aside time for quiet journaling or reflective reading restores our sense of wonder for things we might have passed over, and brings back our vision and grateful hearts.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.  I enjoy connecting with all of you over the summer.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Polly J. Friess
Head of School
