Head of School Update, Thursday May 24, 2018

Dear JH Classical Academy  Parents,

Fortitude comes from the Latin word fortitudo, which is often translated as courage or being strong in the face of adversity. These past few weeks have required extra strength of mind and strength of character as our faculty and team soldier on to defend truth, beauty and goodness on behalf of our students and their future. This is what we are meant to do. This is why we exist. We see the need and we care. Our eyes are fixed on the far horizon so that temporary turbulence doesn’t cause us to deviate. We persevere on the path set before us, standing strong in faith in order to not grow weary in our pursuit of doing good.
We see the fruits of fortitude in our students' academic results:

  • Four students in 6th & 7th Grade earned maxima cum laude or the silver medal on the National Latin I Exam, which is normally administered to high school students. Hopefully a student will bring home summa cum laude or the gold medal next year!
  • 38% of our students scored in the top 10% of the nation on the ITBS, with composite scores of 90-99. 18% of our students scored in the top 3% of the nation on the ITBS, with composite scores of 97-99. The average JHCA class scores 2.3 grades ahead of their national grade equivalents.
  • Two of our students achieved high honors on the John Hopkins test for being among the highest scoring students globally in the 2017-2018 talent search. Two different students scored in the top 1% nationally for the ITBS, with composite scores of 99.
As we educate both the heart and the mind, we remain attentive to the fruits of fortitude in our students’ moral formation. Miss Emma Watkins persented, before the entire student body, her views on two characters from the 9th Grade Humane Letters course that exemplified fortitude.  Both Atticus Finch and John Adams refused to give up fighting for good causes even when their chances of succeeding were low.  Characters from literature and history inspire our students and provide vision and hope that is needed for the present.

Michael Faraday, born in 1791, was a self-taught scientist whose revolutionary research in electro-magnetism led him to develop the first electric motor. He was a brilliant public lecturer, who continually strived to avoid the pride and arrogance that often blinds intelligent people. He turned down knighthood, declined a burial place in Westminster Abby, and didn’t accept the opportunity to become president of the most prestigious Royal Society of Scientists. Faraday’s goal was service not fame.  His final words were, “I shall be with Christ, and that is enough.”

Thank you for your fortitude as we head into the final three weeks of school.  Enjoy your 4-day weekend!
