Head of School Update: Wednesday, September 11, 2019

There was a beautiful herd of elk resting in the corner of our property this morning as I drove into the school. This is such a beautiful place to build a school and work every day! We are so blessed to have more space, bright classrooms, and mountain views from every point on the land. Our week of firsts – first birthday books, first poetry recitation, first morning assembly, first Latin quiz, first day of rain with no gym, first sack lunch delivery, first sick child -- is over.  Everything went more smoothly than expected.
We had our first Professional Development session this afternoon with the faculty and the room was filled with joy. Yes, we were still talking about needing more cubbies, the new security systems, the missing games for indoor recess, and why the printer only works when you are not in the room with the printer. But, there was excitement about the learning that has begun and laughter at “Quotables,” as we call them. One student greeted a returning teacher by saying, “You look so much younger this year!”

We look forward to being on campus with you tomorrow evening at Parent Orientation. This is the only night of the year that we have an adult-only evening to share about the philosophy and methodology of classical education, the why behind our homework, uniform, and absence policies, and new programs such as the House system, Yondr phone management, and community nights. Please register for babysitting (below) so we prepare the right ratio of care-providers to children. If you cannot attend our Parent Orientation, please tell Ms. Koci. We will schedule a make-up event for those parents.

A JH News & Guide reporter came on campus for our first day of school to tour and interview, and wrote a fair and balanced story: News and Guide article.  An interesting cover story in "Christianity Today" this month (which requires a subscription to read) describes visiting a classical and Christian school: “What I found were parents, students and teachers with a shared vision of an educational program steeped in the Great Books and committed to glorifying God, freeing the mind from the marketplace of idols, and shaping virtuous, morally self-regulating citizens.”

As our new board chair, the former headmaster of Hillsdale Academy, Dr. Ken Calvert, described at our dedication ceremony, JH Classical Academy is part of a national movement to reclaim educational values and methods that are tried and true.  We look forward to discussing all this with you tomorrow evening promptly at 5:30 PM.

With appreciation,

Mrs. Polly J. Friess
