Fourth Grade Adventures in Yellowstone

The fourth grade class explored Yellowstone National Park on Friday, May 20 for their class field trip this year. They saw some exciting wildlife – including bison, elk, and a bear – along their drive and in the Park. In addition to visiting geysers, the Old Faithful Inn, and Yellowstone Lake, they learned about the history of the United State’s first national park and contemplated its beauty.
Ms. Lyons, fourth grade teacher, said, “When we arrived, we checked the eruption time for Old Faithful and did a scavenger hunt in the science museum at the Old Faithful Visitor Center. We waited twenty minutes to see Old Faithful erupt, but it did not disappoint! The kids got sprayed with the sulfurous mist, and the geyser erupted for almost four minutes!”

For lunch, the class set up an indoor picnic in the Old Faithful Inn, where they learned about the history of the Inn and the park service’s “Leave No Trace” principles. Back out in the cold and snowy weather, the class explored the West Thumb  Geyser Basin. They could see Yellowstone Lake from the boardwalks of the basin. Ms. Lyons said, “For our last stop, we wrote descriptive paragraphs while gazing out at the frozen expanse of the largest high-elevation lake in North America.”

Fourth grade student, Siena Vitale, said, “My favorite thing that happened on the field trip was getting rained on by Old Faithful! I learned that it doesn’t erupt as much as it used to, so we had to wait an extra ten minutes after it was supposed to erupt.

We are so thankful to have the opportunity to take our students to some of the country’s most beautiful national parks that are right in our backyard!
